Freeding... at the Library

Even though we are all knee-deep in moving into the new Library, Henry has managed to get a new e-book resource up and running! It is called Freading, and Los Gatos Library is one of the very first libraries to offer this new e-book service.

So, even though our brick and mortar library is unavailable right now, there are still lots of ways you can read books, listen to audiobooks, do research, and download great music. So go ahead, indulge yourself.

Last Thursday was the Carnival for the Summer Reading Program, and everyone loved it!

Sarah was one of the volunteers who helped with the face painting...

and Justin Gee and his family were super
busy creating balloon art for everyone.

The Friends of the Library had a table full of great childrens books, and Gwen was super-helpful finding just the right book for each person.

The Summer Reading Program may be over, but there are still a few weeks of summer left. So come on down and pick up something to read, watch, or listen. We have it all... at the Library!

Going Wild... at the Library

Tony Borders came to the Library yesterday, and brought several of his "friends" with him. More than 150 parents and children sat enthralled as Tony talked about each of the animals (okay, they were puppets that looked like animals). Did you know the kangaroo can turn it's ears from front to back?

Tony was brave enough to include "the most feared animal in North America"-- the skunk! Sorry, the picture is not a close-up, but I was afraid to get too near Stinky.

Tony's show was called Critters and Continents, and he included amazing facts about each animal as well as amusing anecdotes.

There are still two summer programs left, so be sure to mark your calendars for Happy Heart Yoga on August 2nd, and the Summer Reading Grand Finale Carnival on August 4th. See you there!

Magic Happens... at the Library

The Friends of the Library sponsored another great program yesterday! Dan Chan Magic Man came to town and worked his magic for a crowd of 200 parents and children.

Before the program started, children had a chance to guess how many pennies were in a special jar. Librarian Jenn Laredo was there to help the kids make their guesses.

Dan had a rapt and enthusiastic audience for the whole show, but hands down, the most spectacular trick was the gigantic balloon trick!
His assistant, Kat the Acrobat, magically "dived" into the balloon...

And proved she was actually in the balloon by sticking her head out of it!

The next program is Monday, July 18th, Bronkar's Circus of Sound. It starts at 6:00pm, and the whole family is invited. Check our website for more information.

Storytelling... at the Library

The Library has several storytimes a week, and they are always popular. But yesterday, Heidi, our Children's Librarian, invited storyteller Jim Cogan to come visit the Town Council Chambers for a special storytime.

Jim told tall tales and funny stories. He encouraged the audience to join in by finishing his sentences when he told some of the traditional stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Everyone had a wonderful time listening to Jim, and especially enjoyed his enthusiasm!

Summer Reading... at the Library

Today was our Summer Reading Kick-Off party. Carol, Henry, Robert, and Jenn wore their Summer Reading T-shirts to show their support.

There are three separate programs this year: the childrens' One World, Many Stories; the tween and teens' You Are Here; and the adults' Novel Destinations.

Melissa is in charge of the adult program this summer and she has some great events planned, including author Carole Terwilliger Meyers, who will talk about some of the great places to visit in Northern California. Later, in July, Melissa has arranged for a speaker to come and talk about how to Travel Wisely.

People came throughout the afternoon to sign-up for Summer Reading, enjoy the music, and visit some of the tables that were set up by the local businesses that are partnering with the Library this summer. The Los Gatos Birdwatcher table was especially popular.

Heidi and Linda took a few minutes to catch their breaths and compare notes.

Where the Wild Things Are... at the Library

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, we had another great program last week. Heidi arranged for Wild Things to visit the Library, and bring some of their "friends."

Brittany, the porcupine, was the first animal we were shown. She is still a baby, and will grow much larger. Gabe said she will get to be about as long as that table! Yikes!

He also brought a black throated monitor lizard from Africa.
Gabe told us that most of these exotic animals come from individuals who have tried to keep them as illegal pets.

Although he looks fierce, the lizard was happy to let everyone (who wanted to!) stroke his back.

Music for the Young at Heart is scheduled for May 12th, so get ready to sing along with Juliette McDonald. And, of course, the Summer Reading Program is just around the corner. I can hardly wait!

Come On In... at the Library

I got to tour our new Library today! It is is huge and gorgeous, even in its unfinished state. Lots of windows, a fireplace, and room to move around.

Bruce Smith was our tour guide. He explained how the building was going to look, which helped us visualize our new working quarters.

With all of the windows in the building, there are so many great views, including this one of Pageant Park (okay, try to visualize it without all the scaffolding).

Most of all, I came away with the impression that our new Library is going to be big as well as beautiful. Look how small Donna looks, and that is just one little corner of the upstairs room!

This place is going to be a wonderful place to work and to visit. I can hardly wait!

Tinkering... at the Library

Henry and Melissa have started a Monday Evening Book Club! It met for the first time last night to discuss the Pulitzer Prize winning book, Tinkers by Paul Harding.

There was a lively discussion, with some people loving the book, and others not so loving it.

The group met at 6:30 in the library, so Melissa provided snacks for those who had not yet eaten dinner. People were more interested in talking than eating, so next time it might be "potluck" snacks.

Next month, the group will be discussing Lark and Termite by Jayne Anne Phillips. So, mark your calendars for May 16th, and come join the discussion!

Knitting Update... at the Library

Our Knit One, Read Too group continues to grow! There were fourteen knitters (plus Janet, our one crocheter) last night. We are starting to feel a little crowded, so we are all looking forward to the new roomier library.

During the evening, we had "show and tell," and I just could not resist showing off some of the completed projects.

This picture does not do Susan's shawl justice. Each square was knitted separately, and then knitted together with a special three needle bind-off. Talk about talent!

Kerstin wore her spectacular green wrap that turned heads at the recent Stitches West event.

There were plenty of other projects "on the needles" last night, including scarves, hats, socks, sweaters, and afghans.

It is always fun to see our regular knitters, as well as the ones who can only come sometimes. And, of course, we welcome anyone who would like pleasant company and lively conversation while they knit.

Pandas... at the Library

To celebrate Chinese New Year last week, Heidi invited the Red Panda Acrobats to come and perform in our Town Council Chambers. Quite a crowd of children and adults came to watch the performance.

Wayne was a blur of motion as he juggled...

and he astounded the audience with his contortion abilities!

Everyone had a great time, and some of the audience even tried a few of their own tricks when the performance was over!

It's Foggy... at the Library

January 26th marked the start of the ninth annual Silicon Valley Reads.
This year's book is The year of fog by Michelle Richmond.
The Library has 21 copies of the book, so be sure to reserve a copy for yourself.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an author talk and book-signing on February 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers, so you will get a chance to meet Ms. Richmond. Our own Los Gatos Poet Laureate, Partenia Hicks, will also be on hand to read an original poem inspired by The year of fog.

Blown Away... at the Library

Thanks to Children's Librarian, Heidi Long, we had another great program last week. Balloon artist, Pat in the Hat, came to Los Gatos and entertained children and their parents in a packed Council Chambers.

The kids were really enthusiastic, and loved being able to help Pat in the Hat work his magic with the balloons.

Everyone had a wonderful time, and Pat in the Hat made sure that each child went home with a balloon. He brought orange and black balloons since it was so close to Halloween.
Jenn, our Teen Librarian, told me that many parents thought the balloons' colors were to honor the San Francisco Giants. Right on both counts!

Blast Off!... at the Library

The Library has several books about building with Legos, as well as several computer games that feature Legos. Now, thanks to the generosity of Library patrons Heather Metz and Sarah Hitchcock-Glover, there is a new Lego club at the Library. Heather suggested to Heidi Long, our Children's Librarian, that kids might enjoy an evening dedicated to working with Legos. Heather and Sarah donated the Legos, and then it was up to the kids to make the club a success.

It was hard to get a good picture of the kids working, because they were a blur of motion, but they were having such a great time that Heidi (who took most of these pictures) didn't want to interrupt them.

Both boys and girls are welcome to come on Tuesday nights. Thanks to Heather and Sarah there are plenty of Legos for everyone!

Sneak Preview... at the Library

Library patrons are in for a treat December 7th, when bestselling author, Cara Black, comes to Los Gatos. We are expecting a big crowd, so Melissa Maglio, our newest librarian, has arranged to use the Council Chambers for the event.

Cara Black is a mystery writer. Her main character, Aimee Leduc, is a detective who lives and works in Paris.
Black has written 10 books featuring Leduc, and all of her books, including her newest, Murder in the Palais Royale, are available at the Library.

So, be sure to mark your calendars for December 7th. But, come in now to sample Black's mysteries, and get to know Aimee.

We're Blu... at the Library

Why is Jim Carrey so happy? It might be because the Library now has Blu-ray DVDs! A very generous patron(s) has donated over 100 Blu-ray movies, and we just put them out this morning.

They are located in the DVD area right under the bestseller DVDs.

We also have a few Blu-ray TVDVDs, and we have interfiled them with the regular TVDVDs. The next time you visit us be sure to take a look at the newest addition to your library.

New & Improved!... at the Library

On September 15th, Henry began a whole new way of teaching Internet skills. He has developed 10 classes that concentrate on one subject per class. For example, next week's class teaches the basics of Word 2010. For anyone who is a little confused about the new Word, this class is a must!

There is even a class about "Loving your Laptop" coming up later in October. The classes will be repeated, so if you miss the class(es) you are interested in taking, just call or email the Adult Reference Desk to find out when they will be held again. See you in class!

Juggling Genius... at the Library

There was quite a crowd on the Civic Center lawn last week. Heidi, our Children's Librarian, had invited Daniel Davinci, the Juggling Genius, to come and perform. It was a beautiful day (before our little heat wave), and everyone enjoyed sitting on the grass and watching Daniel.

He balanced things on his head, juggled cups and other objects...

and balanced and juggled at the same time! What a great show!

"Magic" Carpets... at the Library

Last week Interiors & Textiles donated new carpet squares for Storytime in the Children's Room. The squares are big and colorful, and children love choosing from among the many designs available.

On Friday, the squares got a good "workout" during the Wonderful Ones storytime, and it was nice that there were enough for all the adults and their babies.

Water, Water Everywhere... at the Library

The Library has a new display provided by the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant. The Plant is offering free tours of the wastewater treatment facility that treats your water. They are held on the first Thursdays and Saturdays of the month from now through the end of November.

Floating Away... at the Library

Yesterday was the Teen's Summer Wrap Up Ice Cream Party. There was a great prize for any teen who came to the party and entered the contest. While they were waiting for the drawing, Jenn, our Teen Librarian, served up root beer floats to everyone. Satya was the lucky winner, and she was very pleased! Included in the prize was a $50.00 gift certificate to Target and a $15.00 gift certificate to iTunes. Not a bad reward for a few hours of reading.

Earlier in the summer, Jenn conducted a survey regarding the teen magazines. Everyone who filled out the survey was entered in a drawing for a $10.00 gift certificate to Borders. Diane, the girl who won picked up her prize yesterday, too.

Jenn has one more gift bag, and it will be awarded at the end of August. All teens who have met their reading goals and collected their prizes, will automatically be entered in the drawing. The winner will be contacted by August 31st.

Party Time... at the Library

Yesterday we had a carnival to celebrate the end of the "Make a Splash" Summer Reading Program. There was food and games, plus kids could pick up their Summer Reading prizes. Robert and Jenn handed out prizes and talked to parents about upcoming Library events.

Heidi and Linda could not make the popcorn fast enough, and their was always a line of eager eaters!

And, of course, if you get popcorn, you are going to need lemonade! Will did a great job keeping the lemonade flowing for the thirsty carnival-goers.

The Sponge Toss was a popular game, and there were great prizes for the players. The kids from the South Bay Los Gatos Aquatic Club managed the game, and by the end of the day, some of them were as wet as when they get out of the pool after swim practice.

I think my favorite stop was the face painting table. The lines were super long, and our teen volunteers did a great job painting little arms and faces. Richie, especially, was a real trooper. He stayed for almost an hour after the carnival was officially over to take care of all the kids who were still patiently waiting.

Coming Soon... at the Library

This Thursday is the grand finale of our Summer Reading Program. One of the activities will be face-painting, and it is always such a popular event that one artist is never enough. So, Tuesday, Heidi and Jenn held a workshop to teach two of our teen volunteers how to paint on skin. They practiced on each other, and I think the results are spectacular!

The Circus Comes... to the Library

Heidi and Jenn planned a special program Tuesday evening. They invited Bronkar's Circus of Sound to come and perform at the Library. People of all ages came and enjoyed this unique show.

Some of the things Bronkar did are easy to describe, like his juggling. Other things, like beatboxing, are a little harder. He called it "phonetic funktification," but it is actually a form of vocal percussion. By the way, don't bother to look up "phonetic funktification" in Wikipedia... it's not there.

He taught the audience how to "funktify," and then invited some of them to come up and try it. Some people were a little shy, but this woman seemed to enjoy herself.

There is one more summer program on August 12th. It is the Finale Carnival that marks the official end of the Summer Reading Program. (Summer Reading prizes are available through August 23rd). All ages are welcome, so be sure to mark your calendars, and come enjoy our old-fashioned carnival of popcorn, lemonade, facepainting, and more!

And So It Begins... at the Library

Henry and I went outside today to see what progress has been made on "our" new library. Half of the parking lot has been fenced off, and the construction office trailers have been moved in. And, the clearing of the site has begun in earnest.

Water Play... at the Library

Recently, we had a Family Water Science Fun Night at the Library. Heidi recruited several teens to help run the various stations that were set up both outside and inside the Library. One of the stations was painting with water and oil. Jim had a great time helping the kids make interesting "paintings."

Beautiful designs were created by dipping the paper into the bowl of oil, paint, and water. Look at these... aren't they gorgeous?

Another station showed the capillary action of trees, and how water gets from their roots all the way up to their leaves. When the dry curled up paper was floated on the water, it soaked up the water just like a leaf does. It sort of looks like a flower, doesn't it?

Not all the volunteers were teens. Jenn's mother, a retired teacher, was visiting and she manned the "dancing raisin" station. She had alot of fun, and enjoyed the chance to work with her daughter.

Busy Week... at the Library

If you drove by the Civic Center Monday morning, you might have noticed a crowd of children and adults sitting on the lawn. They were listening to the original songs of Nancy Cassidy. Like most of the children's programs, it was sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

On Thursday afternoon the Council Chamber was packed with curious kids and parents. Owen, from East Bay Vivarium, brought a wonderful selection critters to share with everyone. Linda, our Interim Library Director, looks really interested in the snake Owen is holding.

Owen asked for a volunteer to come up and hold his "puppy." Boy, was this woman surprised when the "puppy" turned out to be this big fellow.

There is plenty of summer left, so there is still time to sign up for Summer Reading. And there are several more great programs coming up, so be sure to check our website for the times and dates.

Workaround... at the Library

The contract with our old Internet timing provider ended last week. The Internet terminals were in a demonstration mode, and our patrons were not too happy about having to log on every five minutes. Things were not looking good until Henry set up the little laptops he uses for the Internet class. This was a good temporary solution, but something else had to be done.

Henry and Carol decided to bring some of our old computers back from the dead, so Carol and Robert started the resurrection. Our workroom was filled with monitors, hard drives, and keyboards as Carol and Robert worked their magic.

First, each hard drive had to be wiped, and the new programs installed. This was a long, slow process, and it wasn't always successful the first time. No wonder Carol isn't smiling!

Next, each computer was set up at the public Internet stations. Robert made sure each one was working properly. You'll notice he is smiling, because that computer is working properly.

Finally, patrons were able to use the "new" computers.
In the next few weeks, we will be getting Apple dual-booting iMacs, but for now, the Reference Staff really appreciates all the hard work and extra hours Carol and Robert put in to keep the Internet up and running. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Busy Thursday... at the Library

Thursday was a busy day at the Library. It started with the "Reading to Kids" workshop. Jenn, our Teen Librarian, asked reading expert, Gayle Gordon, to come and teach teens how to read to children.
The workshop, which will be repeated July 29th, is designed to prepare high school students to take part in the Library's "Books Together" program.

As part of our Summer Reading Program, Heidi, our Children's Librarian, selected the book, The view from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg, for families to read and discuss together. Yesterday afternoon, the family "bookclub" got together. Using the book as inspiration, Heidi hosted a Jeopardy-type game for everyone to play.

And of course there was great food to go along with the discussion! If I had known there would be scones from The Purple Onion I would have read the book, too!

Total Eclipse of the Heart... at the Library

Several members of the Library staff visited some old friends last night at the Los Gatos Theatre. Because most of us work full-time, we really couldn't see them at the midnight show. So, we did the next best thing. We went to the 7:00 p.m. showing of Eclipse.

But first, we had a quick bite at Andale on Santa Cruz Avenue. I had to wait until Heidi and Gretchen put down their forks to take this picture.

There were about 15 of us, including family and friends. We met outside the theatre until the doors opened, and then it was every person for him/herself. We did manage to all sit close together, and we had a great time!

I must admit, I haven't read the books, yet, but I am sorely tempted to read Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn, because the first thing that popped out of my mouth when the lights came up was, "When does the next movie come out?" I don't think I can wait that long to learn what happens to Edward, Bella, and Jacob.

Celebrating... at the Library

Monday was a big day for the Library! We officially broke ground for our new library. Work will begin in earnest in July, but the town officials started the process. As you can see, several children took part in the ceremony. They seemed very eager to get the library built!

The future Children's Room was a busy place where kids were "helping" build their future library.

Monday was also our Library Director's retirement party. Peggy Conaway has been one of the driving forces behind getting our new library built, and this was a great day for her. After she retires, she will continue to be part of the Capital Campaign Committee for the new library, and write her weekly history column for the Los Gatos Weekly Times.

You can keep track of the building's progress, and watch our new Library grow, because this truly is a "once in a generation" event!

The June 11th storytime had a special guest when Bingo Schmingo's Kathleen Rushing presented a program filled with stories, music, and lots of group participation.

Making Plans... at the Library

Last week was finals week, and Jenn, our Teen Librarian, commandeered several upstairs tables to make a "Study Hall" for high school students. She provided a quiet area, school textbooks, and snacks, for anyone who needed to cram for finals.

School is out for summer vacation. But work goes on at the Library. While the kids were studying, Jenn and Heidi were already making plans for the next Study Hall.

I have to admit that I have never been tempted to download music from iTunes, or anywhere else... until now!
The Library is now subscribing to Freegal where you can legally download three songs each week for free. Since I am a Gleek, I have just downloaded three songs from the show. So, if you will excuse me, now, I have to go listen to my music.

Talk Like a Pirate... at the Library

The Summer Reading Program started June 3rd, with Capt'n Jack Spareribs entertaining an enthusiastic group of patrons on the front lawn of the Civic Center.

He juggled swords, did magic tricks, and delighted the audience with his antics. One lucky child even helped him with one of his tricks!

Each child who signed up for Summer Reading got to choose one of Jenn's leis.

Heidi has planned some great programs this summer, so be sure to come down to the Library and "Make a Splash."

Take a Closer Look... at the Library

Our Read One, Knit Too group continues to meet every Tuesday night. It has grown from just a few knitters five years ago, to a large group of new and experienced knitters.
Wilma is one of our "founding" knitters who has been coming for several years. This is an example of her skill and talent. Done on very small needles, it took her ten summers to complete this piece...

But as you can see, it was worth it!

Lookin' Good... at the Library

Even though the weather begs to differ, Spring is here, and everyone is busy finishing up winter projects, and getting ready for Summer.

Henry finally planted his grape vines, so I guess I can't call them "sticks" anymore.

Ellen finished weaving in all the loose ends of her sweater, and is quite happy with the results! If this cool, damp weather continues, she won't have to wait until next fall to wear it.

The Children's Knitting Group continues to be a popular part of Tuesday afternoon activities. Look at this great doll that one of the young knitter's designed and knit all by herself!

Right now, we are getting ready for the annual Summer Reading Program. The theme this year is "Make a Splash!". Like last year, there will also be reading programs for teens and adults, so make sure you sign up. The official kick-off party is June 3rd, so mark your calendars, and get ready for a summer of reading fun!

Passport to Fun... at the Library

Last week was Bike to Work Week, so Heidi, our Children's Librarian, decided to have a special weekend program that promoted bike safety. Thus was born the "Town of Los Gatos Bicycle "Road-eo."

At one station, helmets were checked to make sure they fit properly.

Another station made sure tires were properly inflated, and even big "kids" got to take part in the fun.

Our own Los Gatos bicycle police took part in the Road-eo, and the kids loved riding with them! The picture is a little blurry, but they were really movin'!

Everyone had a great time, and Heidi hopes to do it again next year!

Don't Sweat It... at the Library

This week is Bike To Work Week, and our Town Manager, Greg Larsen, encouraged all Town employees to bike to work on Thursday, and Henry did just that! He came into the office red faced and breathing hard, but he made it! And, he cut quite a dashing figure as he pedaled home after a long day's work. Good job, Henry!

As many of you know, Knit One, Read Too meets every Tuesday night. Last night was a special night because Ellen finished her sweater! She has been working on it for several months, and we have watched her slow but steady progress.

Kerstin and Madoka decided we should celebrate! So, while the rest of us talked and knit, they sneaked out to Lunardi's and got party supplies, including a delicious cake.

Congratulations, Ellen! What a great looking sweater. All you have to do now, is weave in those pesky threads.

Fantasy Faire... at the Library

The 21st annual Fantasy Faire, cosponsored by the Los Gatos Parent Nursery School and the Los Gatos Public Library was held Saturday, May 1st. This year it took place on the lawn in front of the Town offices, and the crowd was huge and enthusiastic!

One of the most popular attractions was the Friends of the Library booth. The Friends had a wonderful selection of children's books for sale, and both adults and children enjoyed looking for the "perfect" book to buy.

The Friends sold so many books that our own Jenn Laredo had to get four more boxes of children's books to replenish the Friends' supply. By the end of the day the Friends had sold 16 boxes of books!

There was also live entertainment at the Faire, including this group of young Taiko drummers.

Over 125 people crowded into the Children's Room yesterday to see Wild Things, Inc. This year, Gabe and Brittany brought seven animals, including this baby fox.

Hooter, the barn owl looks like he is taking a nap on Brittany's arm, but he's just resting for a few minutes.

Cookie, the spider monkey, was probably the most active animal Gabe brought yesterday. She had a great time climbing on the security gates, and the kids enjoyed watching her antics.

The last time Wild Things, Inc. came to the Library, Gabe brought a big crocodile , but this year he had a baby one. He said that the crocodiles are the most aggressive animals he works with, but this little guy looks pretty peaceful!

We have lots of great programs coming up this Spring, so be sure to check our website, and the kid's page and mark your calendars!

Do you have a good idea for a book, but don't know how to get it published? Or have you actually written a book, but can't get it published through regular channels? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, then you need to know about Smashwords!

Henry asked local resident and founder of Smashwords, Mark Coker, to come to the Library and talk about e-books and e-book publishing.

After he and his wife had trouble publishing a book they'd written, Mark started Smashwords. Now, authors can publish and distribute their works with the help of Smashwords. What a great idea, Mark! And thanks, Henry, for presenting another interesting and informative program! (Smashwords all titles to all major vendors of e-books, so the titles are available in multiple formats to fit every reader.)

Yesterday, Henry brought in a whirligig he had made from a plastic bottle. He said cutting the plastic was the hardest part of making it, but once he got the hang of it, the cutting went pretty smoothly.

We brought it upstairs and hung it near an air vent by the sliding doors, and it actually worked!

When we came in this morning, it was still spinning around. We wonder how long it will be before the janitors notice it and take it down.

Henry learned how to make these whirligigs about ten years ago, but there are directions on the Internet, if you want to try your hand at "recycled art."

We had over one thousand visitors to the Library last Thursday when Uncle Jer and his traveling Bee Show came to town.
He told the kids (and parents) all about beekeeping, and encouraged them to try to find the queen bee in his observation hive.

He also passed around an actual honeycomb, so everyone could see how honey is stored in a beehive.

The yummiest part of the program was when Uncle Jer provided samples of honey for the enthusiastic group to taste.

Heidi also had a great display of "bee books" so that the kids could learn even more about the little critters.

Moving Day... at the Library

As many of you know, the historic "Prohibition House" on Fiesta Way had to be moved in preparation for building our new Library.

The movers cut off the roof, and moved it separately. Both the roof and the house were moved at night, and it was quite a show!

The land where the houses stood is being prepared for construction, and all the plants have been removed. Henry hated to see the Concord grape vines disappear, so he took some clippings and put them in a vase filled with water. None of us really believed the "sticks" would do anything... except Henry, of course.

But, looked what happened? Grape jelly, here we come!

How Sweet It Is... at the Library

The Google searching class we had last year was so successful, that Henry arranged to have a second "intermediate" class on Thursday, February 25th. It was a huge success, and the teacher even brought treats!

Henry has several programs planned for the coming year, including "Making Your Nest Egg Last : Strategies for Sustainable Income in Retirement" on March 23rd. Although the program is free, space is limited in our little library, so if you plan to come, be sure to get here early.

A Moving Experience... at the Library

Henry and I took a little field trip today. We watched the movers get the historic house on Fiesta Way ready for moving to its new location. The move will actually take place late at night when the streets will be pretty empty, and it will be super safe to move the house.

Henry decided we also needed to pick some oranges from one of the trees that will be removed. He did not waste any time climbing up into the tree, and in a few minutes we had a bag of oranges to share with our co-workers.

Five houses will get razed to make way for the new library, and the reconfiguration of the streets. The demolition is going to start tomorrow, but the wrecking cranes are already on site. Parking is going to be more of a challenge for awhile, but our new library is worth a little inconvenience.

Organic Knitting... at the Library

We had the first Silicon Valley Reads drop-in book discussion last night. We combined it with our regular Read One, Knit Too meeting, so it was pretty lively!

Henry was the facilitator for the evening. He brought a wonderful selection of organic fruit and locally produced cinnamon bread that served as an example of "cool cuisine."

The discussion got pretty interesting after Madoka started talking about the politics of food. It seems we all had an opinion about out-of-season fruit, carbon footprints, organic vs. non-organic produce, etc.

We all agreed, however, that Henry's treats were delicious! Besides the bread and fruit, he had freshly squeezed blood orange juice for everyone to try. Tart, but refreshing.

There will be another drop-in discussion on February 16th, and Henry has promised to bring some more interesting refreshments. So mark your calendars, and come join us for another drop-in book discussion.

National Handwriting Day... at the Library

John Hancock was the first signer of the Declaration Of Independence, and his signature is both the the largest and the most recognizable on that document. This year, National Handwriting Day and John Hancock's birthday fell on the same day, January 23rd.

To celebrate this occasion, the Library asked noted calligrapher, artist, and handwriting specialist, Marian Gault, to come and demonstrate the "art of beautiful writing." During the course of her visit, she wrote more than 40 patrons' names in calligraphy. I watched as she slowly and carefully wrote each name. Even when her table was bumped, she continued to write smoothly!

Marian brought several examples of her artwork and calligraphy. I think my favorite piece is this drawing of a dahlia... absolutely stunning!

Thank you, Marian, for sharing your wonderful talent with us, and for making National Handwriting Day a memorable experience!

US Bank... at the Library

Yesterday was a big day at the Library. The Los Gatos branch of US Bank presented a check for $5,000.00 to Friends of the Library president, Carol Hamilton. The money is part of a matching grant that will be used for Children's programming. The Friends are also contributing $5,000.00.

Catching Up... at the Library

We had several really great programs during the last few months of 2009. Henry had Daniel M. Russell from Google come and teach a short class on searching with Google.

The class took place in the upstairs area near the GoGreen section, and was very well attended. All in all, it was a huge success, and Henry hopes to do it again, soon.

Henry also invited author Javy W. Galindo to come and speak about his new book, The power of thinking differently : an imaginative guide to creativity, change, & the discovery of new ideas.

More than 30 people came to listen to Galindo speak about his new book, and everyone was enthusiastic about his approach to creativity.

Local author, Steve Sporleder, had a book signing and discussion in the Town Council Chambers. Gallivanting in the gem city : stories of Los Gatos, California, is a series of five short stories about life in a small town. The library has several copies, so the next time you come to the library, check the new book/local author sections to see if one is available.

Heidi, our Children's Librarian, capped off 2009 with magician, Donny Crandell. He dazzled parents and children, alike, with his many amazing allusions.

Vote Early, Vote Often... for the Library

While you are out Christmas shopping this weekend, be sure to stop by the King's Court Shopping Center, and look at their annual "Festival of Trees." Our History Project volunteers have decorated a tree for the contest, and it is spectacular!

There is a contest for "Best Tree," and you can cast your vote for your favorite tree in any of the shops or restaurants at the shopping center.

Of course, I think our tree, with its hand-made historical photos is the best, but I may be a little biased.

The contest ends on Sunday, so there is still plenty of time to cast a ballot for our "historic" tree. (If our tree wins, the money will be used to help fund the History Project.)

One final reminder: the Town Offices will be closed December 24, 2009 through January 3rd, 2010. But, the Library will only be closed December 24, 25, 30, 31. We'll be here, so be sure to stop by and say Happy Holidays.

Crime Comes... to the Library

Stieg Larsson's The girl who... series is quite popular at the Library. Although we have several copies of each of his books, there is a waiting list for each title. So, Henry decided to find some "read-alikes" for people who enjoy Scandinavian crime fiction.

Henry has put together a great display that showcases authors like Henning Mankell, Peter Hoeg, and Hakan Nesser.

We have all three of Larsson's books, even though his latest, The girl who kicked the hornet's nest, will not be released in the U.S. until May, 2010. Henry asked his mother to pick up a few copies for him when she went to Europe. Voila! We have three copies in the collection. Good job, Henry!

For those of you who are not familiar for Larsson, Henry has included a short biography of him in the display. Be sure to check it out the next time you come downstairs.

The nights are long and cold. What better way to spend the evening than to curl up with a good crime... novel?

Holiday fun... at the Library

The 53rd annual Los Gatos Children's Parade took place last Saturday. The Library had a wonderful float that celebrated our new library.

The day before the parade, Peggy, Linda, and several Friends of the Library decorated the truck. And on Saturday it was "show time."

Henry, Heidi, and Jenn, as well as their children, rode on the float. The parade made its way down Santa Cruz Ave and onto East Main Street. As the float passed groups of children, Peggy heard many of them calling out "There's Heidi! There's Heidi!" It seems our Children's Librarian is a celebrity in our town.

As usual, the parade was a huge success. Heidi, Jenn, and baby Miles look especially pleased with their morning's adventure.

Getting Ready... at the Library

Every year Silicon Valley Reads selects a book for the entire Silicon Valley community to read. They choose a book that is relevant to Silicon Valley, is appropriate for both adults and young adults, and is the work of a living author. In defense of food : an eater's manifesto, by Michael Pollan, has been chosen for 2010.

The official kick-off for Silicon Valley Reads is January 27, 2010, but we have lots of things you can do to "get ready" for it.

The Los Gatos Library has added a companion book to our "local" read, Cool Cuisine, taking the bite out of global warming, by Laura F. Stec and Eugene C. Cordero. Did you know that our food choices can reduce global warming as effectively as buying a new fuel-efficient vehicle? I didn't, until I read Stec's book.

Michael Pollan has written several books, and the Library has them in a variety of formats. You can even download one of his books to your iPod!

In addition to books, we have three DVDs that are relevant to Pollan's work: Food, Inc., The Botany of Desire, and King Corn , You Are What You Eat.

There will be two drop-in book discussions in February (Henry promises there will be refreshments), and the Friends are planning a Friday Night Forum in February or March.

So, get ready now for Silicon Valley Reads!

The Gift of Giving... at the Library

Last week, two barrels were put in the Children's Room to collect books and toys for needy children. As you can see, they were completely empty, and waiting for donations.

I went up to the Children's Room this morning, and was happy to see that the barrels are already starting to get filled. The barrels will be in the Children's Room for several more weeks, so you still have time to donate new books and toys.

While I was taking pictures in the Children's Room, Jenn was on duty answering questions and helping patrons find good books to read. Welcome back, Jenn, we're really glad to have you back!

Things are Popping... at the Library

We bought this popcorn maker last Spring, and have used it for several programs. Now, Heidi has started "Popcorn Fridays," and the popcorn maker will be put into service at least once a week.

Every Friday afternoon, popcorn will be available in the Children's Room to any child who has read a book. Each child can write the name of his/her book on a paper popcorn kernel, and it will go up on the bulletin board. Heidi hopes the board will be covered with "popcorn" by Christmas.

Catching up... at the Library

Last year, most of the staff dressed up for Halloween because it fell on a Friday when we were all here. This year, however, Linda was the only one who really got into the spirit of things. She started her day by reading stories at one of our local elementary schools. She then came to the Library, and graced us with her "witchy" presence. Except for the fake moles on her face, she actually was a very glamorous witch. Check out that hat!

Jenn also stopped by with her "dinosaur," Miles. This was Jenn's last day as a visitor to the library, because she came back to work on Monday, after her maternity leave. Be sure to stop by the Children's Desk and welcome her back.

Henry has introduced a new Bestseller Collection: DVDs!
They are located in the DVD section on a top shelf. Don't be surprised, though, if the shelf looks pretty empty most of the time. Henry put the DVDs out on Friday afternoon, and within two hours only two were left!
They are first come, first serve, and holds can't be placed on them. So when you come in, make sure to check the shelf to see what has just been returned.

Something "New"... at the Library

Who is this man, and what is he looking at so intently? His name is Philip K. Dick, and I think he is looking at the great new display that Henry recently created near the Adult Reference Desk. Dick died in 1982, but he is best remembered for science fiction like Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report.

Although Dick has been dead for over 20 years, his books continue to be read and appreciated by millions.

So, the next time you visit the Library, come on downstairs, and take a look at Henry's display. You might "discover" a new favorite author.

Knitting Excellence... at the Library

Our Read One, Knit Too group has been meeting for several years at the Library on Tuesday evenings. As the group has grown, we have held the meeting in several different places in the Library. We've met near the DVDs, near the CDs, and in the Children's Room. While we all loved the tables in the Children's Room, the chairs were a little hard, and the tables were a little short. But now, I think we've found the perfect spot!

Sandra showed us the beautiful shawl she made for her daughter. Her daughter is going to college in Chicago, and the shawl will certainly come in handy during the cold winter months. The picture doesn't do it justice, but the color is a gorgeous burnt orange. Great job, Sandra!

Among knitters, there is a lot of interest in learning new knitting techniques, and the Library has a good collection of knitting books to help with this process. Roz made this amazing afghan, with the help of the book, Tech Square Afghan. I especially like the sheep in the top center square!

There was so much interest in Roz's afghan, that I've ordered the book for our collection. It should be here in the next few weeks. It has a picture of the afghan on its cover, but I think Roz chose prettier colors. What do you think?

Generosity... at the Library

This morning, Heidi and I went to Borders to pick up 10 boxes of books that the wonderful people of Los Gatos bought at the store and then donated to the Library. When we got there, we saw 25 boxes full of donated books! Thank goodness Heidi had her truck.

We unloaded Heidi's truck, and stacked the boxes next to the elevator. We brought the boxes downstairs a few at a time, but pretty soon, our little office space was crowded with books.
Heidi and Sue looked at every single book, and even took time to read and enjoy a few of them.

Heidi was especially pleased there were several board books and atlases among the donations. She had given Borders a list of books that the Library needed, and people used the list as a guide when they were choosing their donations.

Thank you Borders and Los Gatos residents for your generosity.

Oh, and thank you, Borders, for the bunnies! Heidi is still trying to decide how to use them in a program.

Let's Review... at the Library

We have had a busy summer here at the Library. Henry's Internet class met most Wednesday mornings, and the participants were enthusiastic and eager. The class has started using these little notebooks, so they are no longer "chained" to the computers downstairs.

Heidi had several great Children's Programs this summer, including Big Truck Day, and Jeni Swerdlow and Drummm, but I think my favorite event was the Carnival at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Hundreds of people attended, several staff members helped Heidi (that's Henry in the green shirt), and there were teen volunteers doing face painting and balloon animals. Check out that big red octopus!

We also added Transparent Language Flash Drives in twelve different languages. Learning a new language has never been more simple!

And of course, we have continued our Tuesday afternoon kids knitting program, as well as the Tuesday night Read One, Knit Too for adults. Anyone who knits, crochets or needlepoints is welcome to join us. Janet is still the only member who exclusively crochets. Many of us dabble in it, but Janet is really a pro, and does incredible work. Of course, we are still encouraging her to take up the "pointy sticks" and learn to knit.

Although summer is officially over, there are plenty of great Children's programs planned for the fall. Plus we are receiving new books, DVDs, CDs almost daily. In fact, we just got the new Beatles Stereo Box Set today. Each CD comes with a great booklet with amazing photos of the "Fab Four," and a mini-documentary that plays on your computer. What a great addition to our CD collection. Thanks, Carol!

Past, Present, and Future... at the Library

The Los Gatos Cooperative Winery was built in 1886 on Winery Road (now known as Villa Avenue).

Last spring the area was cleaned up and surveyed in preparation for building the new library.

I love our current library, and look forward to coming to work each day. But, I am also excited about the beautiful new library that our architects have envisioned. It is open and spacious and very inviting.

It's Carnival Time... at the Library

To celebrate the end of another successful Summer Reading program, Children's Librarian, Heidi Long organized an old-fashioned carnival. Each child who reached his/her reading goal was given four "tickets" to be used at the Carnival on August 13th.

The lines were long for Justin Gee's balloon art, but everyone waited patiently until it was their turn to tell Justin what animal they wanted him to create. Fortunately, he had Tara to assist him. Tara had attended the workshop Justin taught, so she was ready to do some creating of her own.

The event was held on the front lawn of the Civic Center, and over 400 children and adults participated. All of us pitched in to help make it a success. Henry was the official popcorn vendor. He popped so much popcorn that he had to send Judy to Safeway to buy more!

A few weeks before the Carnival, Jodi Carr, of Arty Party, taught Neda, Karis, Jude, Kaitlyn and Lucy basic face-painting techniques. They had a great time helping Jodie. As you can see from the photo, the kids wanted their hands and arms painted, too.

Pat Nash, our secretary, was the "Lemonade Lady." She served gallons of lemonade to the thirsty carnival-goers, and made sure that each new batch tasted "just right."

Rounding out the Carnival was musician Betsy Stern. She sang songs, told stories, and played several instruments.

At the end of the Carnival, parents and children went home happy and tired! Thank you Heidi for organizing this wonderful event. I hope we do it again next year, because I didn't get a chance to sample Henry's popcorn or Pat's lemonade.

Gifts that Keep on Giving... at the Library

Last week a very generous patron donated about two dozen knitting books to the Library. Marge Rice, who is in charge of the Friends booksales, asked me if I wanted to add any of them to the Library's collection. My answer was a resounding "yes!"

All of the books are in great condition, and some of them were published in 2008 and 2009, like Knitting Noro, and Mother daughter knits.

Needless to say, I was thrilled with this unexpected addition to our collection, and could hardly wait to share the "new" books with our Read One, Knit Too group.

Everyone really enjoyed looking at the books, and many of them were checked out by the end of the evening.

Wilma was really tickled to find the actual stitch pattern she was using for her sweater in Heirloom knitting.

Many thanks to the anonymous donor who has enriched our collection!

Big, Bigger, Biggest... at the Library

Saturday was Big Truck Day at the Library, and about 300 people came to the event. This year, Heidi arranged for a fire truck, a recycling truck, an emergency relief truck, a street cleaner, a police car, and a tow truck to take part. Big "kids" and little kids lined up to take a look inside the recycling truck.

The Volunteers in Policing had a booth where they gave out badges to the children and Child Identification kits to the parents.

Heidi, our Children's Librarian, was busy all morning making sure everything ran smoothly. She did take time to admire the street sweeper's big brush. We decided we both want one for Christmas!

This is the second year Heidi has organized a "Big Truck Day." It was a great success, and, I hope she does it again next year, because I still haven't seen the inside of the fire truck.

Hurricane Katrina... at the Library

Library supporter, Barbara Cassin, recently encouraged Heidi, our Children's librarian, to devote one of her storytimes to how Hurricane Katrina affected the animals that were left homeless. Heidi did some research, and found the perfect book. Two Bobbies, by Kirby Larson, tells the true story of how a dog and a blind cat helped each other survive the hurricane.

Heidi began her special storytime by reading Two Bobbies to the kids. Even though it was a fairly long story, the kids were absolutely enthralled with the story of these two brave animals.

After she read the story, Heidi talked a little bit about the Hurricane Katrina animals. Then, she asked the children to draw some of the animals that might have been rescued. The kids got to work right away!

There were kids spread out on all the tables, and an extra table had to be used. Ms. Cassin had generously donated all the art supplies, so there was plenty for everybody.

While the kids were drawing, Friends of the Library member, Pamela Lawrence, made popcorn for everyone. After all, drawing is hard work!

The drawings turned out great, and Heidi has put them up in the Children's Room for everyone to enjoy. So be sure to stop by and take a look at them.

Heidi and her staff always do fun and imaginative storytimes. But the one Tuesday was extra special, thanks to the Two Bobbies and Barbara Cassin.

Making Friends... at the Library

Every summer, the Friends of the Library sponsors the Summer Reading Program, which includes the weekly children's programs. Over the years, we have had ventriloquists, singers, drummers, puppets, etc. This week, Heidi, our Children's Librarian, had a "hands on" program, where kids (and adults) made their own friendship bracelets.

Each person began by choosing three colors from the large selection Heidi had provided. Then, the braiding began!

With the help of instructions Heidi provided, everyone was soon busy creating their own friendship bracelet. It was a wonderful opportunity for parents to share an activity with their kids.

I was on the adult reference desk during most of the program, so I could only stay for a few minutes. But I did get a chance to see the beginning of some great bracelets, including this one. (I know you can't really see it in this picture, but trust me, it looked great!)

Heidi has planned five more wonderful programs this summer, so check them out, and mark your calendars!

And for you adults, there is still time to sign up for our Adult Reading Program. Just sign up, write two reviews, and receive this great book bag. It will make Henry so happy!

Look Who's Talking... at the Library

Although it was hot yesterday, almost 100 adults and children enjoyed the outdoor show put on by ventriloquist Steve Chaney, and his friend Corny Crow.
Before the show started, Heidi encouraged everyone to sign up for the drawing that would start the show. This week, Heidi had a bookbag, cloth bookcovers, and face paints as prizes.

Heidi held the box while Steve picked the winning names. Each of the children selected a prize, and then it was time for Corny to make his "entrance."

Steve and Corny sang songs, did magic tricks, and even did some juggling together.
By the end of the show, everyone had forgotten about the heat because they were having such a good time.

Thanks, again, to our Friends of the Library for making these programs possible. And thanks to Heidi for finding such wonderful talent!

Practice Makes Perfect... at the Library

There was a Balloon Tying Workshop for library volunteers, ages 12-19. Justin Gee was on hand to teach the basics of balloon art.

It wasn't long before everyone was twisting and tying, and having a great time.

Of course, Heidi, our Children's Librarian, provided great snacks, because balloon tying is hard work... and a lot of fun!

As part of our Summer Reading Program, Heidi Long, our Children's Librarian, has planned a series of wonderful programs. Yesterday, Jeni Swerdlow and Drummm performed for an enthusiastic group of adults and children.

It was a warm day, and most of the audience sat on the lawn in the shade. Even so, many of the children got right up close to Jeni and her assistant.

Everyone was encouraged to participate in the singing and music making. Jeni had brought enough instruments for everyone, and Heidi helped to hand them out. I had a hard time getting a picture of her that was not a complete blur, she was moving so fast!

Going Heyer... at the Library

When Henry started working as our head of adult services, he went through the collection, and identified some areas that needed "refreshing." He saw that the books by Georgette Heyer were old and dog eared. He also discovered that they were still very popular with our patrons. So, he slowly started buying new copies of the most popular titles. At about the same time, a generous patron donated several new editions of Heyer's books.

The books have the most beautiful covers, and it seemed a shame to just put them back on the fiction shelves. So, Henry set up a display so everyone can enjoy the covers, and maybe discover a "new" author.

Georgette Heyer led an interesting life, and her biography has been well-reviewed in LibraryThing's Reviews at my Library (check our online catalog).

Heyer is most famous for her Regency romances, but she also wrote several detective novels, and they have also been reprinted with great artwork.

The next time you are at the Library, come downstairs, and take a look at the display of Heyer's fiction. You might be like Carol, and find the books irresistible.

The Knitting Never Stops... at the Library

Our Tuesday night Read One, Knit Too group continues to grow. Last night we had 16 knitters crowded into our little space in front of the Circulation Desk!
Several knitters had projects they shared with the group. Maria modeled this wonderful shrug that Cheryl made for a relative.

Rochelle is a Sharks fan, but she made this scarf for her brother's girlfriend. Can you see the sharks "swimming" up and down the scarf? She says it was easy to make, but I have my doubts. Great job, Rochelle!

Lugene has been working on this afghan for several weeks, and it really is gorgeous. The pattern is from the booklet Tech Square Afghan by Joanne Clark. Each square of the afghan teaches a different knitting technique. My favorite square is the solid green one on the left. It actually has a pocket as part of the square!

Things are Popping... at the Library

Even though the sky has been gloomy and overcast lately, school is winding down, and summer is just around the corner. That means it is time for our Summer Reading Program. It is easier than ever to sign up, and everyone in the family can join the fun!

Yesterday, was the Summer Reading kickoff party, and Tim Cain entertained us with his wonderful songs and music. The program was out on the front lawn, and adults and children, alike, sang along with Tim. Heidi and Robert were on hand to answer questions about summer reading, and, of course, to sing along with Tim.

Inside the library, children were selecting books and searching for the Skating Goose. Every year, we select one of the Summer Reading characters, and hide its picture somewhere in the library. The hiding place changes each week, and the children (and parents) love looking for it each time they come to get new books. Over the years, searching for the hidden character has become one of the most popular activities of the Summer Reading program.

There was an old-fashioned popcorn maker in the Children's Room on Thursday. The Friends of the Library bought it for Library programs, and Heidi hopes to use it during all the Summer Reading activities.

Everyone can sign up for a Summer Reading program, and there are "prizes" associated with each age group.

I really like the bags that Henry has purchased for the Adult program. Just review two books in LibraryThing (in our catalog) and you can collect a great bag with Mona Lisa on it. I'd better hurry and add my reviews to the website before all the bags are gone!

Los Gatos Public Library is the first library in the nation to feature iPod compatible MyiLibrary Audio Books

MyiLibrary Audio is a new downloadable audio-book platform from Ingram. All the titles in MyiLibrary can be played using an iPod and iTunes. In addition all titles can be accessed using Windows and any WMA compatible device. The Los Gatos Library collection consists of popular fiction and nonfiction titles. The collection can be found at http://losgatospl.myilibraryaudio.com/ and can be accessed from the library home page. Just browse the collection, add titles to your “bookshelf” and checkout using your Los Gatos library card number. Currently there are about one hundred titles available for checkout.

MyiLibrary has some great new features. Users are able to choose their own checkout period, anywhere from 7 to 21 days. Up to three titles can be checked out at any one time, and patrons can request titles that are checked out. Installation of the Ingram Media Manager (IMM) software, which allows the titles to appear in iTunes and Windows Media Player, is required. A partial list of compatible devices and more information can be found in the help area of the MyiLibrary portal.

MyiLibrary e-audio works with any iPod related device, except for the shuffle. MyiLibrary e-audio audio-books also work with all models of the iPhone. Trained staff is available to answer questions and assist with this or any library service.

We Walk the Walk... at the Library

Last week was Bike to Work Week, and our Town Manager, Greg Larson, encouraged town employees to use alternative transportation at least once a week. Well, I drive a hybrid (which Greg included on his list), but Henry really got into the spirit of things!

He rode his bike to work several times last week, riding 10 miles each way. He stowed his bike downstairs, and at the end of the day, he changed into his riding gear and "rode off into the sunset."

I asked Henry if he used surface streets to get to the library, but he said he used the Los Gatos Creek Trail for most of the trip. What a scenic way to get to work!

On another note, Adam Glover's memorial bench
is much appreciated by our Library patrons. Last week, while I was taking pictures of Henry on his bike, I spotted one of our "regulars" enjoying the late afternoon sunshine as she waited for her ride home.

Bursting at the Seams... at the Library

The economy has taken its toll on everyone. Here at the Library, we are seeing a noticeable increase in everything from the circulation of materials to program attendance as patrons take advantage of all the free services we offer.

The Children's programs continue to be well attended. The Bouncing Babies storytime that Heidi started several months ago has become very popular. So popular, in fact, that she recruited another librarian to run a second storytime in another part of the Children's Room. Talk about crowded!

The Tuesday night Read One, Knit Too group continues to attract new members. We are starting to overflow our little meeting area as more people join the group.

The school year is coming to a close, and our high school textbook collection is heavily used. The students are studying hard for their final exams, and the downstairs area is usually crowded during the afternoons.

But it is not just the public area of the Library that is busy and crowded. We don't have much space in our office area, either. One day, Heidi was "forced" to work on a poster on the floor because there was no other space big enough!

Memorable Day... at the Library

Adam Glover was an avid reader, and a frequent visitor to the Library. To honor his love of reading, his parents donated a memorial bench at a dedication held last Friday.

Although it was raining, almost 100 people attended the dedication. People crowded in under the canopies we had set up.

Several people spoke at the dedication, including our Library Director, Peggy Conaway.

The next time you come to the Library, make sure to take a minute to look at Adam's bench.

And if you have a child with you, sit and read a story to him or her. I'm sure that would make Adam happy.

Earth Day... at the Library

Even though every day should be Earth Day, April 22nd is the day we in the U.S. officially celebrate Mother Earth. This tradition was started in 1970, and today, it is celebrated in many countries around the world.

In honor of Earth Day, the third graders from Van Meter School created "eco-art" that they made from items found around the house. They came this morning, on Earth Day, and donated their artwork to our Green Section.

Henry organized the event, and he asked our own Town Manager, Greg Larson, to come and meet the kids, look at their artwork, and read them a poem by Chief Seattle.

After the children had gone back to school, I took a closer look at their eco-art. Some kids used old toys, like this little Fisher-Price horse. Others used bits and pieces of electronic equipment, old CDs, cassette tapes, etc.

The thing I liked the best, though, was this little guy.

The display is located on top of the Green Section bookcase, and will be there for a few more weeks. When you come to the Library, be sure to take some time to look at (and appreciate) the great job the kids did turning rubbish into art!

Your Donations at Work... at the Library

We regularly receive donations of books, DVDs, audiobooks, etc. Usually, their first stop is the little red cart by the Circulation Desk. When the cart gets full, or the Clerks have time, the items are taken to the Friends of the Library's room by the back stairs.

We call this room the "Flower Room" because many years ago, the Friends actually used it to arrange flowers for the Library. Today, however, it houses all the donations.

At least once a week, some of the Friends go through the new donations, and decide what to do with them. Some of them get set aside for the Special Book Sales.

These only happen a few times a year, and draw a huge crowd of savvy buyers, who know a good deal when they see one! This is what the Council Chambers lobby looked like this morning!

Of course, there is also the ongoing Friends Book Sale in the Library. The Friends put new items out several times a week. And, many of our library patrons browse these shelves as part of their regular library visit.

Of course, some of your donations get added to the Library collection. We add things that we don't already have, plus we use the donations to "refresh" the collection. Some of the books, DVDs, etc., have gone out hundreds of times, and we retire the tired copies, and replace it with one of your donations. This morning, I replaced about 15 old books with nice new copies.

We appreciate your donations, and, as you can see, we put them to good use!

Especially for You... at the Library

When Henry Bankhead joined the staff as head of adult services, he wanted to develop several special collections that would meet the needs of our patrons. Peggy Conaway, our Library Director, gave her blessing, and Henry was off and running with his great ideas!

He started with the Best Seller Collection, and went on to create our wonderful BookClub Kits. We now have 16 kits, with many more in the works.

Henry enlarged the Language Collection, which now includes both books and periodicals. We recently received a generous donation of several Chinese language DVDs, and have added them to our DVD collection.

Henry moved our large print collection downstairs, and is adding popular new titles, like Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, and David Baldacci's Stone Club.

Thanks to Henry, we've purchased a new set of California telephone books. And, if you can't find what you need in the phone books, just ask us, and we can look it up in our online database RefUSA.

Henry's newest brainchild is the Green Collection, where you can find the newest information on ways to live "green".
The next time you visit the Library, check out these great collections, and keep your eye out for any new ones, because I'm sure Henry has many more ideas!

Happy Birds... at the Library

The "skys" were full of Happy Birds last Thursday when Ed and Julie Cardoza brought their feathered friends to the Los Gatos Council Chambers for a special Children's Program.

Before the show started, Julie set up the perches, and then Ed brought the birds into the building. Zac, Marty, and Forrest waited patiently while the rest of the birds were brought in... and then the kids and their parents arrived!

Julie introduced the birds to the audience, told them a little bit about each bird. Zac is a Harlequin Macaw, and was born in San Jose in 1989. He loved the audience, and our own Children's Librarian, Heidi Long, became a living perch for Zac.

This was another great program, and everyone had a wonderful time watching the birds perform their amazing stunts. Thanks, Heidi!

Henry Multitasks... at the Library

Henry's Internet classes continue to be well attended, and he now has an assistant! During the very first class, our secretary, Pat, noticed that Henry had his hands full trying to run the PowerPoint presentation and provide individual help at the same time. So, she volunteered!

During class, Pat follows Henry's verbal directions on her laptop so the students can see what their computer screens should look like.

She also provides individual help to a student when Henry is busy.

Pat says Henry is a great teacher, and she is learning as much as she is helping!

Another project Henry is working on is making downloadable audiobooks available to iPod users. He is working with the folks at Ingram Digital, and hopes to have them available in the next few months. Now that is exciting news!

Multitasking... at the Library

The Children's Room was extra busy yesterday, with two different programs going on at the same time.

In the storytelling corner, Karen McVay, from Spanish for Little Hands, read Spanish language stories. Karen included music in her program, and encouraged everyone to participate.

Heidi has scheduled Spanish Storytime for the first Thursday of each month, and all ages are welcome. So, be sure to drop by next month!

In another part of the room, the tables were crowded with children learning the ancient art of origami. Students from the Los Gatos High School Japanese Honor Society showed the kids how to fold paper to make different kinds of magical creatures.

By the end of the afternoon, the tables were filled with colorful boxes and fanciful birds.

The LGHS students were wonderful teachers, and everyone had a great time learning about the art of paper folding. This was the second time the Japanese Honor Society did an origami program at the Library, and we hope it becomes an annual event!

We're Bursting at the Seams... at the Library

The Library continues to grow in popularity as a place to meet, study, and attend programs.

You may recall that last year Henry borrowed an entire set of textbooks from Los Gatos High School. At first, only a few textbooks were borrowed each day, but all that has changed! Today, this is what the downstairs area looks like after school! And there are usually more kids (and textbooks) working upstairs. The textbooks have been borrowed more than 900 times this school year. Henry's "experiment" has been really popular with the students, who no longer need to lug heavy textbooks around all day. They can just come to the library and use ours. Thanks, Henry!

The Children's Programs are also heavily attended. Several months ago, Heidi added a Playtime after each Storytime, where kids and their caregivers can play with age appropriate toys. It has also become a great time for the adults to network. Here, Heidi is handing out toys, while Jenn trys to get an accurate head count. All I could see was a packed room with happy people.

Even our weekly Read One, Knit Too has attracted a large group of enthusiastic knitters (and one crocheter). Last night, we could barely fit everyone into our normal space near the Circulation Desk. And this was on a rainy night!

As the community grows and changes, we will continue to provide a well-rounded collection, great programs, and enthusiastic employees.

Future Tense, Past Tense... at the Library

Most of you know that we are in the planning stage of building a new library. The architects have done a wonderful job designing a library that we all will enjoy using.

But did you know that the place where the new library is going to be built was once a winery? Yup, it was called the Los Gatos Cooperative Winery, and was built in 1886.

Last Friday, a crew was clearing the land, collecting soil samples (and "discovering" a water line), when they uncovered some old tiles.

Henry collected a few of the tiles, and brought them back to the library. We don't know exactly how or where they were used at the winery, but they are a great piece of history!

By the end of the day, the samples had been collected, and the dirt parking lot was leveled. This was just the beginning of what I'm sure will be an exciting process, and I'm looking forward to watching our new library grow!

Talking Turkey... at the Library

We have many wonderful programs at the Library, and yesterday was no exception. Robert led the Children's Book Club in a discussion of The Great Turkey Walk by Kathleen Karr.

The great thing about this story is that it is based on fact: there really were turkey drives in the American West! Can you imagine herding these guys across the country? It's got to be almost as hard as herding cats.

Anyway, Robert had prepared a map showing the route the turkeys took, and the kids had a lively discussion about the book.

Afterwards, the children drew "For Sale" signs that depicted how the book's main character, Simon Green, might have advertised his merchandise.

At the end of the meeting, the kids chose Billy Clikk : creatch battler by Mark Crilley for the next Bookclub read.

Copies of the book are available at the Children's Reference Desk, so come and borrow a copy and get ready for the next discussion, scheduled for March 26th. Robert would love to see you!
